The colder weather and lower traffic have both helped to keep the local trails in good shape.  The northern trails are in good to very good condition and will continue to be groomed three to five times a week. The southern and eastern trails are being groomed as needed. We have an awesome base this year so just a little new snow each week and everything is as smooth as smooth can be. Trail 15 south is very rideable but bare in just a few spots and a little icy on the corners. Trail #116 is in good condition and very good going through the woods. Trail #111 from Crystal Falls to Amasa is in fair to poor condition. They are logging on trail #111 in a couple different areas so you do have to run the road for a ways. Also trail #16 from Crystal Falls to Sagola is in fair to poor condition again do to logging on parts of the trail. The temperatures are going to remain cool all week, highs in the mid 20's and lows around -5. Snow is again in the forecast for this coming week. Let's all do a little snow dance up here for the U.P.

  • Menominee County: (2/1) 4" base. Trails are groomed and in good condition.
  • Alger County:
    • Munising: Base 6-10". Trails all in good shape with icy corners so be careful. Groomers out grooming daily.
    • Grand Marais: 6+" base. 20-39" cover.  Not much new in the weather or the trails. They remain in Good to Excellent condition with some icy corners. The groomers have been busy cutting, pulling and packing snow into the corners but stay on the alert. We have been getting a little fresh snow almost every day this week so the Crazy 8's are great for the weekend ahead! Warnings....when riding Trail #89, please, stay on the trail in the construction area. As many of you know, the road is being paved and there are places where the new roadway has been cleared creating an almost irresistible urge to go off-trail and explore. Construction work has ceased until Spring, but there are stumps, brush piles, culverts and other hazards hidden under the snow. Logging Activities on the Crazy 8's - Loggers are out of most places but they will be using Trail #8 East to the Intersection of #443 and then north of there for a short ways, Trail #8 East starting about 15 miles east of Grand Marais to CR 407 (about 7 miles) and again starting about 5 miles or so east of CR 407 for about 1 mile. In each of these sections, loggers have left plenty of snow cover on the trail....just remember, where the trail is plowed, you could encounter a logging truck!
  • Delta County: (1/18) 5" cover. Trails are groomed and ready to ride. Some bare spots.
  • Schoolcraft County:
    • Seney: 0-6" base. Trails are in good condition. 43 was groomed yesterday and 431 was groomed last night. The swamp is a little rough yet until we get enough snow to fill the natural terrain in again. We are also grooming 43S to Curtis and it is in good condition. The last mile and a half is still being plowed for logging.
    • Manistique:(1/29) 0-10" base. Trails are poor in town and good to the north. Last weeks rain took its toll on the town trails. Jackpine Lodge north your good to go. Lake effect advisory on the north section of our system today. Drive safe.

Eastern Upper Peninsula - By County

    • Trail 2 to Rexton: 1-3" base. Trail is in fair condition.
    • Trail #473 has about 7 miles of plowed road from Rexton south to Epoufette due to logging in the area. Please watch for trucks and deer in the area. The base is marginal to 3 inches and in fair condition.
    • Trail 473 Rexton to Trout Lake: Trail is in fair condition.
    • Town Trails: Trails are in good condition with 0-3" base.
  • Chippewa County:
    • Sault: (2/1) Trails are being groomed & mostly in excellent condition.  Temps in the teens at night and 30 during the days. All trails have a layer of ice under the snow. Some corners are very icy and there is not a lot of snow for base. The warmer daytime temps hurt the trails faster with the light snow we have. The trails will be very busy this weekend with the I-500 going on. We will be out doing extra grooms to attempt to keep them smooth.

      • Trail #8 - Brimley to Sault: Base 1-4". Fair to good condition. Some very icy spots have developed. Go with the flow of traffic when crossing the bridge in Brimley.
      • Trail #8 - Brimley to Raco: Base 2-6". Good to excellent condition. All wet spots are frozen over. Some drifts from high winds.
      • Trail #8 - Raco to Naomikong: Base 3-8". Excellent condition. More snow out in that areas of our trails.
      • Trail #497, 497 & 449 inside the Sault: Base 1-4" Fair to good condition. Some wet spots. City curfew is from 1am -6am. Most city streets are open to traffic 20mph, stop at all intersections, ride the right hand side of street - not on sidewalks or private property
      • Trail #49 - Sault to Kinross: Base 2-5" Fair to good condition and some wet areas and ice between 8 & 9 Mile Rd. When the trail is running along roads make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.
      • The downtown trail: Groomed and ready for use.
    • Paradise: Overall the trails are in great shape. Some of the south swamp #8 trail is icy, ride with caution.

      • Falls Trail #45: Very good condition.
      • Pine Stump Trail #8: Very good condition.
      • South Trail #8: Very good condition.
      • Birch Hill #451:
      • Raco #8:
      • Hulbert #8:
    • Kincheloe/Kinross: (2/6) 3" base. Trails are in fair condition.
    • Drummond Island: 0-3" base. Overall conditions: Poor. With no new snow accumulation to speak of in many days, trails are in much need of snow.
  • Mackinac County:
    • St Ignace: Well, sorry to sound like a broken record, but more of the same around here. Things are very thin, with a few bad areas, but perfectly ridable. All of our trails have a super good ice base on them, and at least an inch of cooling snow on them. As you get about 4 miles North of Iggy, it gets better on the Western loop, and stays the same going North on the RR Grade until North of Moran. I just talked to a group of firefighters from Ohio that rode to Cut River last night, and aside from the couple of bad spots on the RR Grade, and the 1 mile section of the pipeline on #473 like I have been reporting, they enjoyed their ride, and found some good snow. (I hope you enjoy your ride to the falls today folks!) One good thing about the trails being this thin, is that there is not enough snow to make bumps. Things are smooth and fast. We are running the groomers every couple of days as we cycle new people in the rotation. The water has opened back up to Mackinac Island. Ice bridge is looking like a more distant possibility this year.
    • Curtis: (2/2) Everything is cold and hard again and we received about 4" of snow last week. We could use some more snow. Trail 45 to Newberry and Trail 43 to Germfask was groomed Saturday evening/Sunday morning and passable.  They are calling for more snow this week.  Trail 45 to Newberry - fair to good condition Trail 2 to Gould City, Engadine & Naubinway - fair condition  Trail 43 to Germfask - fair to good condition.
    • Les Cheneaux/Cedarville/Hessel: (2/2) 2" base. Trails are in fair condition. There is currently 2-3 inches of snow on the ground, groomers have begun non-scheduled runs. About 80% of the trail conditions are fair. Trail 491 from Detour to Pickford is good. Reroute into Pickford from the west side runs along Townline Rd. Trail #49 running south from pickford to trail #47 west of cedarville is rough in some areas, ride with caution.
