Snowmobile Trail Report

Updated: 3/08/2010

Western Upper Peninsula - By County:

  • Gogebic County & Ontonagon County: Even though temps have been unseasonably mild, we still have 16" of snow on the ground-streets & crossings are bare. Best riding early in the day - trails soften up in the afternoon.
    • Gogebic Range Trail Authority Trails: Groomers are out... I know on trail 2 for sure, waiting for word on the balance of the system...they are grooming wherever conditions permit, and we won't know exactly where that is until tomrrow's report. Overall conditions fair with some good yet...some are poor. Bare spots tend to pop up during the day.
    • Lake Gogebic: Groomers are out-northern trails are still in pretty good shape as there's snow in the woods-trails poor in town...it's difficult getting in and out of Bergland...other trails are fair. Trails south of Lake Gogebic are all in poor condition.
    • Ontonagon/Silver City/White Pine: 12" base. Will groom only when it freezes. There is still some good riding here. You will find that the temps have taken a toll on the trails. You can go around bare spots and water . Be carefull. If you want the last ride of the season, now is the time. It seems that we are the only ones that still have riding available. Ride safely.
    • Watersmeet: Town and parking lots were bare before the weekend, but the groomers were out when temps/conditions permit-Will try to have an update tomorrow.
    • Bruce Crossing: 3" base. The trails are in fair to poor condition with many bare areas.  Trail 3/8 from the Agate bridge to Bruce Crossing has many bare areas. Grooming on our trails is hit and miss, we can groom some in the very early mornings but with the warm temps we are loosing the snow fast out in the open areas.
  • Houghton County & Keweenaw County: 28" snow cover.  The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open but most trails will not be groomed again until we get some new snow. Trails are reported to be in poor to fair condition. Intown areas, road crossings and many trails sections are bare. Trail 133 from Gay to Lac La Belle is closed due to logging. Trail 133 from Gay to Lac La Belle is closed due to logging. Remember to watch out for the groomers when you're out on the trails....they have the right of way! The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, plese, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the rider's safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.
  • Baraga County: 50-60 degree weekend temps. There is no snow left on the trails in the in town areas. If you want to ride you will have to trailer your sleds out of town. Because of the warm sun there are areas of slush pockets on the trails - use caution. Trail #159 is closed for the season - please stay off. Alston #109 trail there are some logging trucks that are using the trail - use caution.
    • Chassell Trail #15 North: 1-4" base. Poor condition. Fair riding in the woods away from town.
    • Sidnaw Trail #15 to #8/15: 3-10" base. Fair to good condition.
    • Alston Trail #15 to #8/15 to #109: 3-10" base. Fair to good condition.
    • Nestoria Trail #15 to #8: 3-10" base. Fair to good condition.
    • Baraga to Andersons Corner #14: 6-22" base. Good condition.
  • Iron County: 6-10" snow cover.    All trails are open. Most trails are in poor to fair condition. All trails are very rideable however with the warmer temps and sunshine has stopped all grooming. The northern trails are in fair condition The southern and eastern trails are in poor condition but rideable. The following trails are in fair condition once you get through the towns and road crossings, trail #2 going west out of Iron River,#15 north and #107. Watch all corners for ice and a few bare spots. Trail 15 south is in poor condition but rideable, keep an eye on all corners as there may be ice and a few bare spots in the direct sun light. Trail #116 is in fair condition. Trail #2 heading east from Iron River is in fair to good condition again, it takes about 3 miles to get away from the towns for the trails to improve. Trails #113 and #16 are both in fair condition. Trail #111 from Crystal Falls to Amasa is in poor condition, a little icy on some corners and a few bare spots in the fields and on the road. They are logging on trail #111 in a couple different areas so you do have to run the road for a short distance. Also trail #16 from Crystal Falls to Sagola is in fair to poor condition. Trail #16 from Iron River to Crystal Falls was groomed on Friday and in fair to good condition except for the road crossings and town area. And finally, Trail #18 from Amasa to Republic has been reported to be also in fair condition as well. Be careful when coming to road crossings, the trails are bare in spots so use good judgement and slow down. Again, this is just for the few miles it takes to actually get through each town and at the road crossings.

      • Trail 310 to Halfway: Poor condition.
      • Trail 310 (West 310 to Trail 14): Poor condition
  • Dickinson County: (3/5) 6" ground cover. Trails are in fair condition.
  • Menominee County: No new report available.
  • Alger County:
    • Munising: (3/2) We have good snow on the trails and the groomers are hitting every trail every day. Trail 8 is loose snow that is not packing so its from fair to good depending when it was groomed. Base is about 10 inches.
    • Grand Marais:  6" base & dwindling. Yesterday we had temperatures into the high 40's with lots of sun and as a result, we had a lot of water and slush in town, open areas and close to the lakeshore. Remarkably, we had a lot of traffic and town was full of sleds most of the day. By 8:30 last night it was still 38 in town and just above freezing in the snowbelt then it warmed up a bit during the night. This morning, it's 37 already. The weather forecast is calling for temps to remain in the mid to high 40's during the day dropping into the high 20's to low 30's at night for the next week to 10 days. Spring is here! From here on out, grooming will be determined on a day by day basis. Norm said he doesn't think we will be grooming into town or along the Lakeshore anymore. It's time to use the staging areas. From about 10 miles north of M-28 to a few miles south of Lake Superior, the trails are fair to good. You may find it all from dirt, to slush, to ice, but there's still good snow and two tracks to explore out in the woods. Spring riding really can be great with low traffic, warm, sunny days, and picnics on the trail with the family and friends! Warnings....when riding Trail #89, please, stay on the trail in the construction area. As many of you know, the road is being paved and there are places where the new roadway has been cleared creating an almost irresistible urge to go off-trail and explore. Construction work has ceased until Spring, but there are stumps, brush piles, culverts and other hazards hidden under the snow. Logging Activities on the Crazy 8's - Loggers are done working in all areas of the Crazy 8's!
  • Delta County: No new report available.
  • Schoolcraft County:
    • Seney: (3/4) 0-8" base. Trails are in poor to good/spring conditions. The good news is that there is plenty of snow up north and we are still grooming it. Don rode to GM yesterday and said the trails were great. The bad news is that it is getting ugly getting around town. We haven't had much of a base most of the winter close to town and the sunshine is melting it quickly. The trails close to town are very dirty. The Fox river road also melting fast and not a good option anymore. Yesterday we got out on the alternate route up 77 but it is very thin and showing some dirt too. We will go out that way today but I don't know if it will last the weekend. If you are coming up this week-end and don't mind trailering out you'll not be disappointed. The riding is still good and the 2 tracks are awesome. Lots of sunshine predicted so bring a camera.
    • Manistique: Dirt to fair conditions. No snow in town. Jackpine north still lots of snow. Snirt in some corners and road crossings up north. Still great two track and backcountry riding.

Eastern Upper Peninsula - By County

  • Luce County: (3/4) Please be careful around corners there is ice under the snow in the curves. We have had warm days and cold nights the past two days. Some areas have dirt on them. Please stay on trails and try to avoid private propertyDue to heavy traffic and warmer weather we did haul snow into the trailhead at Timber Charlie's to Slaughter House Road. We are trying to make your ride more enjoyable and minimize any wear & tear to your sled. All trails are in good/fair condition but we have had a little meltdown due to warmer weather so please be careful and enjoy the riding. The trails in town are just in fair condition but as you go out north they get better and are in good condition. We only got about 4-6 inches of snow Friday night. Warm weather forcast for the up coming week. Mid 30's
    • #9 North: 6-8" base. Trail is in fair condition. Watch for water on the trail when leaving the staging area near the railroad tracks, Once you get past the 3 mile staging area things get better. Be careful on the straight away between M-123 and 3 mile staging area, mogals form there quick depending on how many sleds go over it. There are some bare spots close to town. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THERE IS LOGGING ON THE TRAIL ABOUT 8 MILES NORTH, SO WATCH FOR LOGGING TRUCKS
    • #45 North: 6-8" base. Trail is in fair condition, there are 2 logging sites on it.  Both south and north of the skyline trail head is plowed and can be rough at times. The trail from Co. Rd. 500 to the Falls is in fair shape. Due to ice it took the groomer 3 attempts to get up the hill just south of M-123.
    • #9 South to Hemlock Ridge Rd: 1-3" base and is in fair condition.
    • Trail 2 to Rexton: 1-3" base. Trail is in fair condition.
    • Trail #473: 0-3" base and in fair condition. About 7 miles of plowed road from Rexton south to Epoufette due to logging in the area. Please watch for trucks and deer in the area.

    • Town Trails: 2-4" base. Trails are in fair condition.
  • Chippewa County:
    • Sault: (3/4) 2" base. Trails are in poor condition. Poor trails in town, fair to good west of Brimley.  South to Kinross has more snow once you get out of town.  Warm temps the last several days mid to upper 30's has wreaked havoc on the trails in town.  And no snow in the last 3 weeks, in town, have lead to many bare spots developing in and around town.  More snow is needed.   All trails are very icy.
      • Trail #8 - Brimley to Sault: Base 0-4". Poor to fair condition. Poor when leaving town fair close to Brimely. Some very icy & bare spots. Go with the flow of traffic when crossing the bridge in Brimley. Shoulders bare going thru Brimley.
      • Trail #8 - Brimley to Raco: Base 1-4". Fair to poor condition. Still being groomed as long as the snow holds.
      • Trail #8 - Raco to Naomikong: Base 2-6". Fair to good condition. More snow out in that areas of our trails. Still grooming here.
      • Trail #497, 497 & 449 inside the Sault: Base 0-2". Poor condition. Many bare spots.
      • Trail #49 - Sault to Kinross: Base 0-4". Poor to fair condition. Low snow close to town. When the trail is running along roads make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.
      • The downtown trail: closed.
    • Paradise: (2/26) Well folks its snowing right know we have about 2 inches of fresh snow and we should be getting more today and the trails are holding up a few dirt spots but might be gone by time we get the snow so come on up and ride. have a great day.
      • Point Trail #452:
      • Falls Trail #45:
      • Pine Stump Trail #8:
      • South Trail #8:
      • Birch Hill #451:
      • Raco #8:
      • Hulbert #8:
    • Kincheloe/Kinross: (3/1) 3" base. Trails are in good condition.
    • Drummond Island: (3/1) Overall conditions: Poor. Tree line to Canada open.
  • Mackinac County:
    • St Ignace: (3/5) I am sorry to say, that we are about all done. I could pick and choose and tell what is ridable, and what is not, but there is no decent loops, and no getting from one destination to another without encountering difficulty. This weekend and next weeks forecast shows no signs of snow, and temps above freezing for the next 10 days. If you rode this area this year, thanks for checking out our local community, if not, then hopefully we will see you next season.
    • Curtis: (3/3) In and out of town is really rough. We recommend trailering north/northwest where they have more snow. Trail 45 to Newberry - fair to poor condition Trail 2 to Gould City, Engadine & Naubinway - fair to poor condition  Trail 43 to Germfask - fair to poor condition
    • Les Cheneaux/Cedarville/Hessel: (3/3) 2" base. Trails are in poor condition.  For the most part the trails are ok but the area's were the sun is taking a toll on the trails. Bad spots seem to be more troublesome than they are worth. For you hardcore snowmobiler's the trails are ridable but in rough shape.
